Demelza East Sussex Opens New Sensory Room

A sensory room features a glowing infinite mirror, bubble tubes, and cushions with cartoon faces, all bathed in blue and purple light with neon patterns on the floor.

Children supported by Demelza in East Sussex can now make use of a new sensory room at the charity’s community hub in St Leonard’s.

The space has recently been installed by Rhino Sensory UK.

It has different pieces of sensory equipment inside, including a waterbed, bubble tube, fibre optic carpet, mirror ball, solar projector and an infinity tunnel.

The waterbed allows children with restricted movement to not only get comfortable but it can also be heated so it will be a warm cosy spot during the winter months.

The room, which took two and a half days to install, has already been booked by families who have been full of praise for it and the facility has a whole.

Demelza in East Sussex

Demelza East Sussex offers a community hospice at home service, providing therapies, short breaks and end of life care in the comfort of a child’s own home.

Families can also access the hub, which opened to children in 2019, and is fully accessible, with a changing places facility and hoist on site, as well as beautiful gardens for children and families to enjoy.

It also gives them the chance to talk to the nursing and family support teams when they visit.

Thanks to Funders

Demelza’s Lead Nurse for East Sussex, Melissa Mungovan, said:

Sensory rooms and activities are so beneficial to the children and families on our caseload.

The new room provides a comfortable, relaxing and stimulating environment, with something for all the senses.

It’s a fantastic addition to our hub and we can’t wait for more families to make use of it.

Melissa thanked the trusts and groups which have helped raise the funds for the new room, including the Bryan and June Amos Foundation, the Sylvia Waddilove Foundation, the Mrs A Lacy Tate Trust and residents of Winchelsea.
